Roasted Turkey in my oven stuffed with homemade dressing ……..
Thanks for reading, Chris, and sharing. Any special ingredient in your dressing?
Oh, my favorite is (was) my mother’s-in-law potato salad ā”ā”ā”
Yum! What’s her secret ingredient, Petra? Thanks for reading, and playing along.
My favorite food is the turkey cooked with citrus and lots of spices.
Thanks for sharing, Linda. Do you put citrus in the turkey (an orange or lemon in the cavity)? And what spices do you use?
I appreciate you reading!
Robin, yes I put oranges and lemons in the cavity along with celery, onion, rosemary, thyme, and oregano. Under the skin is a mixture of herbes de provence, melted butter, salt and pepper, and a small amount of some of the orange and lemon juice. It is delicious!!
Oh wow! This sounds delicious. Do you add citrus to your dressing? I add citrus zest and fresh orange juice to my dressing (great-grandmother’s recipe).
Turkey and Dressing is my favorite! It’s a recipe passed down from my grandmother. My kids love it & both of them know how to make it, even Clay @ 22 years old
Way to go, Clay! I think I’ve had your dressing. Any turkey tips, Janet?
Thank you for sharing!
My favorite thanksgiving menu item is pumpkin pie. I start the day off with a piece of pie while watching the Macy’s parade on tv!
Oh, I love that idea, Dodi! I think I’m going to do that this year. And you don’t have to make breakfast! Do you have any special pumpkin pie tips to share?
Thank you for reading and sharing.
This year we are leaning towards a Southwestern style Thanksgiving.
Interesting, Patrick. I made guajillo-tamarind turkey once with cornbread-chorizo dressing. It was delicious. What are you all thinking?
Thank you for reading, and sharing!
Sweet potato casserole. You won’t find any marshmallows in this bowl of deliciousness!!!
I absolutely love sweet potato casserole as well, and don’t use marshmallows. Do you top with anything? And if so, do share.
I appreciate you reading, Billie Jo!
Oddly enough, my favorite Thanksgiving menu item is creamed pearl onions. We only have it on Thanksgiving, and have since I was a child. I think it was a throw back to my mother’s childhood on Connecticut.
I am not a fan of gravy, preferring homemade cranberry sauce on my turkey, and the onions are lovely over stuffing or mashed potatoes. š
That actually sounds very good, and I’ve never had creamed pearl onions. I also love cranberry sauce (not the jelly in a can) on my turkey. This is making me hungry! Thanks for reading, and sharing. I may be buying some pearl onions at the store this weekend.
Add some fresh peas for color… enjoy! š
We need some green on this plate we’ve created here, don’t we? Thanks for sharing, Cynthia!
Broccoli rice casserole! It’s an old family tradition!
Love broccoli and love rice! Thank you for sharing, Juliann!
LOVE As long as you have guest who you love, and enjoyable company, anything you serve is delicious.
Now there’s the answer. We all want love at our table, don’t we? And although the recipe can be complex, with many ingredients, the end result is well worth the effort.
LOVE this response. Thank you for sharing, and I look forward to our early Thanksgiving celebration together. XO
My favorite dish at Thanksgiving is the sweet and sour braised red cabbage I always make for my mother-in-law’s cousin George. It’s tangy (cider vinegar) and sweet (brown sugar) and cuts perfectly through all the richness of the gravy, stuffing and mashed potatoes.
That sounds delicious, Erika. And I’ll be trying your Not Ketchup Spiced Fig as our ham glaze this Thanksgiving. Post and photos to come.
Thank you for sharing, all the way from California.
Hard to pick! I have to say a tie between Mike’s Crawfish Mac & Cheese and Sweet Potato Pie!
Crawfish Mac & Cheese? On my! I want some now!
I need all of the stuffing!!
Do you cook your stuffing in the turkey? And any special ingredient you must have in your stuffing?
Thanks for reading, Nikki!
Gravy!! On the turkey, on the mashed potatoes, and on the rolls. Made by my mother of course!!
I could go for some of Myrna’s cooking. Please send her my love, and thank you for sharing, Donna!
sweet potatoe casserole with brown sugar and glazed pecans !
We top our sweet potato casserole with a brown sugar glaze as well, with pecans, rather than marshmallows. Delicious, right? One of my kids favorites too.
I appreciate you playing along with us.
Oyster stuffing. Then always love to mix corn and mashed potatoes.
I stir my corn and mashed potatoes together too! Did you have oyster stuffing back in Pennsylvania, or after you moved south? I love it, but knew nothing about it until I moved to New Orleans in the 80’s.
Thank you so much for sharing, Marsha!
“Moms Special Salad” – romaine and raw kale, red onion, hard boiled egg, real bacon, green olives, black olives, diced pepperoncini, minced roma tomatoes, dried cranberries, pumplin seeds, walnuts, beets, sliced radish, blue cheese crumbs and red wine vinegrette. Alot in it and the entire huge bowl is always emptied š
That sound incredibly delicious, and I know my daughter would love it. I’m going to write the ingredients down right now. I may have to use one of my own dressings though. š
Thanks for reading, and sharing, Tammy!
sweet potatoes, but better yet, eating the whole meal at “Three Birds”
Oh, that’s sweet, Pat! We’re giving our kitchen staff a break, though, Thanksgiving day, so you’ll have to eat with us the day before, or the day after, or both.
I am so grateful that you’re following my journey here, and thank you for sharing!
wow hard to say….it only comes once a year….my favorite is the all the leftovers made into a Sheppard’s pie the next day…..mmmm mmm mmm….fuzzy slippers on and feet up!!!!
Shepherd’s Pie made with Thanksgiving leftovers – brilliant! I’ve never even thought of that, but I’m on it this year. I’m headed to Michigan for the holiday to spend time with my son, so I need some fuzzy slippers this year too.
Thanks for the Thanksgiving-themed Shepherd’s Pie idea! Hope you’ll keep following the journey here . . . cheers!
Roasted butternut squash gratin – yummo! I can’t wait for Thanksgiving
Yummo, indeed! Thanks for sharing, Ali. Less than two weeks till Thanksgiving!
Sausage stuffing!
Do you cook your stuffing in the bird? I love stuffing, and always wonder why I don’t make it more frequently.
Thanks for sharing!
My roasted Brussel Sprouts with shallots, Bacon, Balsamic Vinegar and Shaved Parmesan .
Oh yes. Roasted Brussel sprouts are an awesome complement to turkey. Thank you for reading, Kay!
Turkey and stuffing, I love the smell of turkey in the oven.
I agree. . . there is something so comforting about the smell of turkey roasting in the oven. I appreciate you sharing, Diana!
I love yams.
Me too!
My favorite part of Thanksgiving is the candied sweet potatoes!
Do you top yours with marshmallows, Kim? I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
My mother always made something that she called “Heavenly Hash”, which is a variation on the ambrosia theme. No coconut, but marshmallows, mandarin oranges, pineapple (I think she used fruit cocktail too but sadly I don’t remember exactly and I can’t locate the recipe, if there was even one written down….) and sour cream. It was just one of those things she always had on holidays. I miss my mother terribly, but she wasn’t known for her culinary skills. That said, what she did do well, we all loved.
Check this out, Mabel –
Isn’t exact, but sounds close. I’ll do a little more research on this and see if I can find a recipe that uses sour cream. I appreciate you reading, and sharing. Where are you all celebrating this year?
Dressing and gravy! I make my dressing with sausage and plenty of water chestnuts. I put a couple extra eggs in because my dad likes the dressing wet but the crust really crusty/crunchy.
Can I come over? Moist dressing with sausage and water chestnuts, crusty on the outside . . . I’m really ready for Thanksgiving now!
Thank you, Dean, for reading and sharing!
Dressing. ….actually the joy of giving family and friends around
It’s a special holiday, isn’t it? I wish you and your loved one much joy this holiday season.
Robin
My very favorite has got to be my Mother in law’s Walnut, apple, celery stuffing, it’s so good…
Great to hear from you, Rose. Enjoy your Thanksgiving, and that walnut, apple and celery stuffing!
It would have to be a decadant brussels sprouts, ham, cream and greyere cheese casserole that my mother used to make that I have yet to replicate exactly. I come close but she had a way about her that made it especially good. Unfortunately, I’m the only one left in my family who likes brussle sprouts!!
That sounds so delicious! I would love to hear a recipe. I’m going to play with those ingredients with my leftover Thanksgiving ham and see what I can come up with. Thank you for sharing, Jennifer!
I always look forward to my Mother’s stuffing made in a roaster and her “24 Hour Salad” every Thanksgiving.
